New spring hours announced

PITTSTON —The library announces the following hours for the spring season:

• Mondays and Thursdays — Noon to 7 p.m.

• Tuesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays — 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Book Club will meet at 6 p.m. Monday, April 10 to discuss “In a Dark, Dark Wood” by Ruth Ware.

The current session for Grown-Up and Me concludes Monday, April 10. Children ages 18 months to 5 can bring their adult to the library for a fun story, craft and free play from 6 to 6:45 p.m. every Monday.

Tales on Tuesday with Miss Kristen Boettger concludes Tuesday, April 11. Programs are: Books and Babies — ages newborn to 18 months, 9:30 a.m.; Terrific Twos — ages 18 months to three, 10:30 a.m.; Preschool Pals — ages three to five, 11:30 a.m. Registration is required.

There will be two Kindergarten Ready activities that includes literacy activities and snacks from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, April 11 with families with children ages birth to 5-years-old.

A blood drive will be held at the library Thursday, April 13. Registration will be available online at the Red Cross page or by calling the library.

Play K is a six-week program for children entering kindergarten where we will “play” kindergarten. This program includes the days of the week, calendar time, coloring, scissor practice, story time and free play. This program begins Monday, April 17 and will be held at 1 p.m. for six straight Mondays. Call the library to register.

STEAM activities for children in kindergarten through fifth grade will be held at 4 p.m. Thursday, April 20.

A Public Town Hall Meeting with US Congressman Matt Cartwright will take place from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday, April 20. This event is free and open to the public.

Teens can celebrate William Shakespeare for his 453rd birthday at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, April 20.

The Pageturners Tween Book Club for students in grades four and five will meet at 4 p.m,. Thursday, April 27 to chat about “A Series of Unfortunate Events: A Bad Beginning” and do a book related craft.

Author Micha Archer will visit the library as part of a special reading event at 1 p.m. Thursday, April 27. The featured story will be “Daniel Finds a Poem,” which was written and illustrated by Archer.

Blackout Poetry Night will be held at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, April 27. With this project, teens are given a piece of writing from an old book, newspaper article, or something else, and then get creative by blacking out all the words they don’t want to use and keeping the ones they do. Call the library to register.

Friends of Pittston Library will hold a two-day book sale from 10 a.m to 4 p.m. Friday, April 28 and Saturday, April 29. Proceeds benefit library programs.

Stories on Saturday with Miss Alyvia will begin a new session Saturday, April 29. Each event begins at 11 a.m. and includes story time, songs, nursery rhymes and a craft. Call the library to register.

Teen Reading Lounge will meet from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sunday, April 30for an off-site event.

Teen Advisory Group will meet at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, May 11 for their last meeting of the year.

Roaming Readers Book Club meets at 11 a.m. every Tuesday. Participants get the opportunity to walk, talk and listen to an audio book. Each walk lasts 30 minutes. Call the library to register.

Fiber Art Afternoon is held from 1:30 to 3:3o p.m. every Thursday. Participants will bring their own supplies and work on crochet, knitting and felting.

The Friends of the Pittston Memorial Library meet at 6:30 p.m. the fourth Monday of every month. New members are always welcome. For more information call 570-654-9565.

Lego Club meets Mondays from 4 to 5 p.m. Library provides the Legos, but adult supervision is required and participants are required to help clean up.

Volunteer opportunities are available at the library. Opportunities include helping in the library, or with the Friends of the Pittston Memorial Library group. If interested, fill out a volunteer form at the front desk.

Adult Coloring Club meets at 1 p.m. every Friday and on scheduled evenings.

The Crochet Club meets from 10 to 11:45 a.m. every Tuesday. Participants are asked to bring their own supplies including a hook sized I, J, or K yarn.

Board games for all ages are available at the front desk and can be used anytime.

The 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten Program at the library is free and open to all children in the community from birth to kindergarten. The child will receive a bag with an age-appropriate book to keep in his or her collection.

Celebrate ‘Captain Underpants’ April 11

WEST PITTSTON — Celebrate the 20th anniversary of Captain Underpants at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 11 along with a new book series “Dog Man.” Participants will don red caps, come up with their own superhero name, play with toilet paper and decorate some underwear. Registration is required.

Bad Art Night will be held at 6 p.m. Saturday, April 15 as participants are encouraged to make their worst piece of art to display in a Bad Art Exhibition at the end of the program. The creator of the “Worse Piece of Art” will win a prize. Registration is required.

Join Anne Bramblett and Maria Jiunta-Heck at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 19 on how to gather ideas for a home makeover without spending too much money. Registration is required.

Elephant and Piggy Day will be celebrated at 1 p.m. Friday, April 21 that will include stories, games and crafts for pre-kindergarten students. Registration is required. A Pigeon Day will be celebrated at 1 p.m. Friday, May 26.

Author Paul Cwalina will be available at 6:30 p.m. Monday, April 24 to help participants explore the reasons to become a self-published author. He will explain the advantages, and disadvantages of doing so and well as where to self-publish and give tips on how to market books. Registration is required.

Students from the Misericordia University Speech-Language Pathology Department will be available at 1 p.m. Friday,. April 28 to conduct a story time as well as educate parents and caregivers on language development and literacy.

A LuLaRoe Clothing Fundraiser will be held from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, April 29.

American Girl Party will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, April 29. Participants and their dolls will celebrate highlighting the new Girl of the Year 2017: Gabriela by enjoying excerpts from her latest “American Girl” book and participate in theme-related crafts and activities. Registration is required and is limited to the first 18 girls. Children must be 8 years of age or older.

A beginner computer class, designed specifically for seniors, offers insight into the basics of a computer. Participants will learn the different parts of the computer, be able to turn off the computer correctly, manage icons, open and save files, personalize their computer by changing the background or screen saver, browse the internet and use email. This program will be held every Wednesday from 6 to 7 p.m. from May 3 to May 24. Registration is required and space is limited.

Learn to make cost effective and eco-friendly beauty products at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 9. Registration is required.

Join Anne Bramblett and Maria Jiunta-Heck at 6:30 p.m. Monday, May 15 as they go over inexpensive decorating and renovation ideas to spruce up older homes. Participants will learn about how to use silver leaf, create an accent wall with stencils instead of wallpaper and re-imagine painted surfaces with wax-relief and weathering techniques. Registration is required.

Children will be introduced to Scratch, an online programming environment to help them learn code at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 16. They will be introduced to ReCon 6.0 Programmable Rover and create binary necklaces of their initials. Also, the Ozobots are back from the popular STEM program. Registration is required.

Metallic Origami Book Making will be held at 6 p.m. Tuesday, May 23. Using sponges, stamps and bubble wrap, participants will turn plain brown paper into metallic works of art. Registration is required.

Kindergarten Readiness Program is held at 1 p.m. every Friday. This early-literacy enhanced program is designed to introduce children to the library, get them interested in books and develop the skills needed for school. Parents can spend some fun one-on-one time with their child, or grandchild, as we read books together, sing songs, play games and make crafts centered around the weekly, kid-friendly theme. Learn pre-reading techniques that can be done at home to enhance their skills. Register by Wednesday of each week.

WYOMING FREE LIBRARY

Minecraft Show is April 9-15

WYOMING — The library is hosting a children’s Virtual Minecraft Art Show. Contest participants can design up to three original art pieces using the video game “Minecraft” and email them to the library. The contest runs for the entire month of March. All submitted pieces will be displayed on the library’s website and Facebook page during National Library Week, April 9 through April 15. Reading help will be available at the library for children in grades 1-4 from 1 to 3 p.m. every Wednesday. Call the library to register.

The Literary Snoops Book Club meets at noon the second Wednesday of east month. Participants are encouraged to bring a bag lunch for the discussion.
