When Bianca Pizano is scoring, it’s a good sign for the Michigan State field hockey team.
Pizano leads the Spartans in goals with five and is second in overall scoring with an assist for 11 total points.
Michigan State is 4-0 in the games in which the junior from Wyoming Area has goals and has only one other win, going 1-6 in the Big Ten and 5-11 overall going into the weekend.
The Spartans were on a seven-game losing streak in which they had scored just two goals before Pizano connected three times in consecutive wins over Ball State and Ohio State.
Pizano scored two goals Oct. 14 in a 5-1 win over Ball State. Then, she converted her only penalty stroke attempt of the season Oct. 19 to help Michigan State to its Big Ten victory with the 4-3 win over Ohio State.
Pizano picked up her first assist of the season Oct. 26 in a 5-1 loss to nationally ranked Indiana. She is second on the team in shots (29) and third in shots on goal (13).
This is the second straight year that Pizano has led the team in goals. Last season, she tied for the team lead, finishing with five.
Pizano has started the last 10, giving her 13 total starts while appearing in all 16 games.
Ella McKernan, a freshman from Wyoming Area, has played in eight games. She has taken two shots, one of which was on goal.
