SCRANTON — Hanover used a five-run fourth inning to pull away from Greater Wyoming Area for an 8-3 victory Thursday afternoon in a Section 5 Little League Senior Baseball winners bracket game.
GWA will now play East Scranton at 5:30 p.m. Friday in an elimination game. The winner would have to defeat Hanover Area twice on Saturday for the Section 5 title and a trip to the state tournament. The first game Saturday is at 10 a.m. and a second game, if necessary, will be played one hour after the completion of the opener.
All games are played at the East Scranton Little League.
Hanover led 3-2 going into its big fourth inning. Dyllan Cole led off the inning with a double into the left-center gap, the first of four hits in the frame. Ashton Shiel later added an RBI single and Justin Richards followed with a two-run single for a 6-2 lead. Nate Jaslar added an RBI double to right-center and the fifth run scored on an error.
GWA struck first with two runs in the first inning. Rich Kashuba led off the inning with a double to left and scored two outs later on an RBI single by Jude Janosky. Janosky scored on a single to right by Charlie Alfano.
GWA, though, managed just two more hits the rest of the game. Jeremy Lavelle singled to left with two outs in the third. Janosky led off the fourth with a home run to left.
Down 2-0, Hanover took the lead for good with three runs in the third inning. Todd Kolbicka and Jaslar had RBI triples, while Shiel knocked in a run with a sacrifice fly.
Tristan Davies, Richards and Gavin Isopi combined on the mound for Hanover to strike out eight.
