The University of Pennsylvania’s Marc Minichello, the National Collegiate Athletic Association Division I javelin champion, has been selected by the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association as the Mid-Atlantic Region Men’s Field Athlete of the Year.
Minichello set a series of records throughout his senior season at Penn, culminating in a national title with a Penn and Ivy League record throw of 81.17 meters (266-3). He had set those records two weeks earlier with a throw of 80.38 meters (263-8) at the NCAA East Preliminaries where he also set meet and site records.
The Wyoming Area graduate also won the Penn Relays and won the Ivy League title with a meet record throw.
Minichello followed up his college success by returning to Oregon to compete in the USA Outdoor Championships in late June.
Minichello’s throw of 79.05 meters (259-4) was third best out of 16 entries in what also served as the trials for Team USA for this week’s World Championships.
USA Track & Field wound up selecting the first-, second- and fifth-place finishers for the national team.
