Wyoming Area opened the Wyoming Valley Conference Division 1 portion of its field hockey season by beating a pair of defending District 2 champions on consecutive days Wednesday and Thursday.

The wins over 2021 Class 3A champion Hazleton Area and Class 2A champion Crestwood, along with a victory over current WVC Division 2 leader Abington Heights, give the Lady Warriors the early lead in the District 2 Class A playoff ratings race for the top seed.

Wyoming Area is 2-0 in the division, tied for third, one-half game behind Wyoming Seminary and Lake-Lehman. The Lady Warriors are 5-0 for one of just two perfect overall records in District 2, joining Honesdale (7-0).

Alexys Moore assisted the first goal and scored the second Thursday night when Wyoming Area defeated host Crestwood, 2-1.

Wyoming Area took a 2-0 lead, then held off a Crestwood comeback in the fourth quarter.

Bianca Pizano scored the first goal. Lyla Rehill assisted Moore’s goal.

Wyoming Area built leads of 16-5 in shots and 19-5 in penalty corners.

The goal was just the second allowed by Wyoming Area, which has scored 29.

Abington Heights 2, Pittston Area 1

Abington Heights held on to sole possession of the WVC Division 2 lead with Thursday’s road win.

Madison Zalewski set up goals by Caroline Pease and Marygrace Sabatini in the last 4:16 of the second quarter to give the Comets a 2-0 halftime lead.

Bella Giardina scored for Pittston Area late in the third quarter on an assist from Morgan Hilbert.

The game was evenly played with each team putting nine of its shots on goal.

Pittston Area had an 8-6 advantage in penalty corners.

The Lady Patriots fell to 2-1 in the division and 3-4 overall.

Wyoming Area 8, Hazleton Area 1

Lyla Rehill scored five goals, including four in the last 14:32 of Wednesday’s victory.

The Lady Warriors led just 2-1 before the late outburst that also included goals by Ella McKernan and Nina Angeli.

Angeli scored twice.

Bianca Pizano had a pair of assists while Alexys Moore had one.

Pittston Area 11, Berwick 0

Morgan Hilbert had a hat trick and the Pittston Area defense held host Berwick without a shot in Tuesday’s WVC Division 2 rout.

Maddie Karp and Jess Kobi scored twice each.

Wyoming Area 6, Abington Heights 0

Lyla Rehill had a hat trick and assisted on another goal as Wyoming Area shut out visiting Abington Heights in Monday’s non-league game.

Rehill scored twice in the fourth quarter.

Alexys Moore scored on a penalty stroke while Juliana Gonzales and Ainsley Flynn also scored for the Lady Warriors.

Nina Angeli had two assists and Bianca Pizano had one.

Wyoming Valley West 8, Pittston Area 2

Laila Zdancewicz and Marissa Mooney had hat tricks as host Wyoming Valley West downed Pittston Area in the Sept. 10 non-league game.

Bella Giardina and Kassi Kobi scored for Pittston Area.
