North Pocono knocked both Wyoming Area and Pittston Area out of the District 2 Class 3A boys soccer playoffs before the 2021 Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association state quarterfinalists had their title defense attempt come up short in a 2-1 overtime loss to Tunkhannock Friday night.
The Trojans hosted in each round of the district tournament.
North Pocono shut out Pittston Area, 2-0, in Monday’s quarterfinals.
The Trojans outshot the Patriots, 24-1, and took all 11 of the game’s corner kicks.
Wyoming Area got past Crestwood, 2-1, in the quarterfinals before losing to North Pocono, 3-2, in Wednesday’s semifinals. Both games went to overtime.
Liam Burke scored the overtime game-winner against Crestwood. Casey Noone had the Wyoming Area goal in regulation.
Kendall Heck and Ben Nichol scored against North Pocono.
CLASS A BOYS
Old Forge reached its first district championship game by defeating Forest City, 5-2, in the quarterfinals Monday and Gregory the Great, 4-2, in the semifinals Wednesday.
Holy Cross repeated as champion with a 4-1 victory in a Friday final that was scoreless at halftime.
CLASS 3A GIRLS
Maggie Ratchford scored a school-record six goals and tied a school record for points with 14 by adding two assists when top-seeded Abington Heights routed Pittston Area, 12-0, Monday.
CLASS 2A GIRLS
Wyoming Area routed Western Wayne, 9-1, in Tuesday’s quarterfinals, but was eliminated with a 3-1 semifinal loss to Lake-Lehman.
Halle Kranson scored the game’s first three goals and finished with four goals and an assist against Western Wayne.
Hannah Fairchild had two goals and an assist while Emily Kostik added a goal and two assists.
Ella Shepulski and Anna Wisnewski also scored. Abigail Francis had two assists.
Olivia Allen made 10 saves.
Ashley Hudak’s hat trick led Lake-Lehman to the semifinal victory.
