MOOSIC – Four-year starters Kayla Leo and Cassandra Scripkunas are back to lead the way as Wyoming Area tries to improve on last year’s four-win softball season.

Leo and Scripkunas joined coach John McNeil in attending the first Bill Howerton Baseball/Softball Media Day to talk about the season.

“Some of my biggest hopes are to have a positive season and really unite as a team,” Leo said.

The third baseman batted .391 last season while sharing the team lead in runs scored (17) and doubles (five).

Wyoming Area went 4-6 to finish fourth of six teams in Wyoming Valley Conference Division 2 last season, but was just 4-16 overall.

“The team that we have now, fortunately enough, we’ve been together since Little League,” Leo said. “It’s a really strong bond that we have and, in my opinion, we have a lot of talent with the younger girls stepping up into the open positions.”

The Lady Warriors face a difficult schedule after having the 2022 season end in a District 2 Class 4A quarterfinal loss to two-time state finalist Tunkhannock.

“We have a strong bond as a team,” Scripkunas said. “We need that before we can bring our talent to the field.

“We need to support each other with no negative feedback.”
