Joe Lalli’s two-run single with two out in the bottom of the seventh inning Friday lifted host South Scranton over Greater Pittston, 7-6, in an opening-round game of the Region 5 Senior American Legion Baseball Tournament at Connell Park.

Greater Pittston scored three runs in the top of the first inning and carried the 3-0 lead into the bottom of the third. It scored two more runs in the fifth and one in the sixth and led 6-3 before South Scranton broke loose for four runs in its final at-bat.

Aiden Mehal was 3-for-3 for Greater Pittston, which had 11 hits.

Jeremy Cawley went 2-for-5 with a double, home run and two runs scored.

Troy Davis and Hunter Lawall followed Cawley at the top of the order and also had two hits each. Davis scored twice and drove in a run.

Those three fueled the fast start.

Cawley opened the game with a double and scored when Davis followed with a single. Lawall then singled to put runners on the corners.

Vinnie Bonomo’s squeeze bunt drove in Cawley and Lawall eventually came in on an error.

Davis led off the fifth with a single and scored on an error. Bonomo reached on the error and scored on a Casey Noone single.

Cawley homered to left with one out in the sixth.

The double-elimination tournament was scheduled to continue Saturday.
