OLD FORGE – Pittston Area made it two girls basketball wins in 22 days over rival Wyoming Area, beating the Lady Warriors, 56-29, Thursday night in the first game of the Anthony “Badger” Marseco Memorial Tournament at Old Forge.
Daniella Ranieli scored 15 points and Kaitlin Chernouskas added 12 in the victory.
Krea Bonita and Abby Sterba scored seven points each while Kendall Day grabbed seven rebounds for the Lady Warriors.
Wyoming Area jumped in front 5-0, but Pittston Area recovered quickly to lead 17-9 after one quarter and 25-13 at halftime.
The Lady Patriots got points from seven different players in the first quarter and Grace Callahan led the balanced attack in the first half when she scored all six of her points.
Ranieli and Chernouskas each hit two 3-pointers during the 22-11 third quarter to build the lead to 23 points. Ranieli also hit two free throws for 10 points in the quarter while Chernouskas had eight. Pittston Area broke the game open with nine straight points in the middle of the quarter.
Lili Hintze was 4-for-4 from the line while scoring six of her eight points in the second half.
Ranieli finished 7-for-8 from the line.
Wyoming Area 51, Hanover Area 11
Wyoming Area broke loose for 28 second-quarter points Saturday afternoon to take third place in the Marseco Tournament.
Addison Gaylord and Abby Sterba led the outburst, which produced a 39-8 halftime lead.
Gaylord started her scoring with two 3-pointers and had all 12 of her points in the quarter. Sterba also did all of her scoring in the quarter, going 5-for-7 from the line, hitting a 3-pointer and adding another basket for 10 points.
Morgan Slusser matched Gaylord for the scoring lead with 12 points. She had seven to help the Lady Warriors to a 12-3 lead after one quarter.
Wyoming Area held Hanover Area scoreless in the third quarter and allowed only a 3-pointer in the fourth quarter.
Old Forge 67, Hanover Area 22
Jewlya McCullon and Talia Piragas combined for 59 points as Old Forge rolled through the semifinals of the Marseco Tournament with Thursday’s rout.
McCullon scored a tournament-record 33 points, including 14 in the first quarter and 10 in the third quarter.
Piragas had eight points each in the second third quarters on the way to 26 total.
