The Wyoming Valley Conference Wrestling Tournament, postponed because of weather conditions earlier this season, is scheduled for all day Sunday, beginning at 10 a.m. at Wilkes-Barre Area.

Dallas and Berwick won division titles in dual meet competition. Pittston Area went 3-2 to finish in a three-way tie for second place in Division 1 while Wyoming Area was 2-3 for a three-way tie for third place in Division 2.

Pittston Area was second to Wyoming Valley West in last year’s tournament while Wyoming Area was fifth out of 12 teams.

Julian Everitt won the 145-pound title for the Patriots last season. He is 16-1 at 152 and 160 pounds this season, but has missed some time.

Dominic Bernardi, who is 11-10 this season, was second at 127 pounds.

Brody Spindler was third at 215. He leads the team in wins with a 21-4 record and pins with 12.

Dominic Innamorati (14-7 this season) was fourth at 139.

Connor Novakowski and Jonathan Stone were among Wyoming Area’s four individual champions last season, winning at 114 and 133 pounds.

Novakowski is 20-9 and Stone is 3-3 this season.

Nate Obrzut, who leads the team in pins and wins this season, was third at 285 pounds. He is 25-6 with 16 pins.

DeMINICO GAME

Pittston Area is at Wyoming Area in boys basketball Sunday afternoon in the 19th annual Eugene R. DeMinico II Memorial Game.

The game honors the memory of DeMinico, a Pittston Township police officer and decorated veteran for his service in Iraq, who was killed in a motorcycle accident in November, 2005.

Pittston Area won last season’s game, played in December, 61-41.

Dane Schutter, who has led Wyoming Area into title contention this season, was his team’s Most Valuable Player with 13 points and nine rebounds in the loss.

The junior varsity game is at 1:30 p.m. with the varsity scheduled to follow at about 3 p.m.

Proceeds from the game benefit local police force K-9 units.

ARENA SCHEDULE

District 2 continues to work out plans for its ninth straight season of basketball championships at Mohegan Sun Arena at Casey Plaza.

The district has set the schedule and order of games, which had to be modified this season when the Thursday through Saturday dates, used in the first eight seasons, were unavailable at the arena.

Championships will be played in a quadrupleheader Sunday, Feb. 25, followed by either three or four games – depending on whether a district team is the highest seed in a District 2-11 Class A Subregional final – Feb. 26 and Feb. 29.

The Feb. 25 schedule begins with Class 2A girls at 1 p.m., followed by Class 4A boys at 3; Class 3A girls at 5 and Class 5A boys at 7.

Wyoming Area is a contender to play in its first Class 4A boys game at the arena. Pittston Area would need to pull off upsets to get back to the arena in Class 5A boys.

The Feb. 26 schedule could start with a Class A boys game at 2 p.m. It will have Class 4A girls at 4, the District 2-4 Class 6A Subregional girls final at 6 and the Class 2A boys game at 8.

Wyoming Area, after playing at the arena for the first time last season, is one of the teams trying to get to the Class 4A girls game.

The Feb. 29 schedule is likely to start with a District 2-11 Class A Subregional girls final at 2 p.m. The rest of the schedule calls for Class 3A boys at 4 p.m., Class 5A girls at 6 p.m. and the District 2-4 Class 6A Subregional final at 8 p.m.

Defending champion Pittston Area is among the teams trying to get to the Class 5A girls final.

DISTRICT CHAMPIONSHIPS

District 2 championship schedules have also been set in the other winter sports.

The dual meet tournament concluded in wrestling Saturday at Pittston Area.

The District 2 Tournament, where individuals try to qualify for the Northeast Regional as part of the path to try to reach the state tournament, is set for Feb. 23-24 at Wilkes-Barre Area.

Wrestling begins at 4:30 p.m. Feb. 23 and 10 a.m. the next day.

The diving portion of the District 2 Swimming Championships is scheduled for Feb. 24 at the Wyoming Valley Catholic Youth Center in Wilkes-Barre.

The swimming events will be held March 1-2 at Wilkes-Barre Area.

Class 2A will begin at 10 .m. March 1 and 11 a.m. March 2.

Class 3A will start 3 p.m. the first day and 5:30 p.m. on the second.
