Wyoming Area opened defense of its Wyoming Valley Conference Division 1 field hockey title Thursday with a 2-1 road victory over Lake-Lehman in a meeting of potential title contenders.

The game was tied in the third quarter before Ella McKernan scored the game-winner on an assist from Juliana Gonzales.

Ainsley Flynn had opened the scoring for Wyoming Area.

Gianna DeCesaris tied the game for Lake-Lehman on an assist by Sophia Lenza.

Wyoming Area had a 9-8 edge in penalty corners and scored both its goals off of corner plays.

Rylee Muniz made three saves in the win.

Pittston Area 4, Holy Redeemer 0

Maddie Karp had a goal and an assist as Pittston Area defeated host Holy Redeemer Thursday in a WVC Division 2 game.

The Lady Patriots got goals from four different players. Julia Homschek, Giuliana Latona and Alivia McAndrew also scored while Allison Kipp had an assist.

Pittston Area led in shots on goal 24-5 and penalty corners 12-2.

Karlie Podwika made five saves in the shutout.

The Lady Patriots are 2-0 in the division and 2-1 overall.

Pittston Area 3, Wallenpaupack 2

Julia Homschek scored with 5:13 left in overtime Tuesday to lift Pittston Area to victory in a home opener that matched potential WVC Division 2 contenders.

The game was also the first in the division for Pittston Area.

Maddie Karp scored the two regulation goals for the Lady Patriots and assisted the winner.

Wallenpaupack led 1-0 at halftime and Karp twice brought Pittston Area from behind, including tying the game with 4:02 left in regulation.

Kassie Kobi assisted on the goal that forced overtime.

Pittston Area led 15-6 in shots.

Wyoming Valley West 8, Pittston Area 1

Laila Zdancewicz scored four goals and assisted on two Aug. 24 when Wyoming Valley West opened with a non-league win over visiting Pittston Area.

The Lady Spartans built a 5-0 halftime lead.
