Lucia Campenni scored a natural hat trick Wednesday as unbeaten Wyoming Area went on the road and defeated Lackawanna Trail 4-0 in a meeting of Wyoming Valley Conference Division 1 and District 2 Class A field hockey contenders.
The win avenged a season-ending, overtime loss in last season’s district title game. Lackawanna Trail went on from that game to win three state playoff games and play in the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association state championship game.
Wyoming Area, the defending champion, protected its WVC Division 1 lead and its perfect record with the win.
Campenni assisted Lyla Rehill’s goal less than six minutes into the game on a penalty corner play, then did the remaining scoring.
Campenni scored early in the second quarter then added goals 59 seconds apart early in the third to break the game open. Ella McKernan assisted on her second goal.
The Wyoming Area defense continued its outstanding play, posting its third straight shutout by limiting Lackawanna Trail (6-2-1) to three penalty corners and preventing the Lady Lions from turning any of those into a single shot on goal.
Wyoming Area has allowed just five goals all season.
The Lady Warriors are 7-0 in the WVC, two full games in front of second-place Crestwood. They are 10-0 overall.
Pittston Area 9, Holy Redeemer 1
Maddie Karp scored three goals and assisted on two Tuesday as Pittston Area routed visiting Holy Redeemer in a WVC Division 2 game.
The Lady Patriots are 8-1 in the division to share first place with Dallas. They are 8-5 overall, trailing only Crestwood and Dallas in the District 2-4 Class 2A Subregional standings.
Allison Kipp and Karinne Podwika scored two goals each in the win. Giulianna Latona and Kassie Kobi added goals.
Wilkes-Barre Area 5, Pittston Area 1
Pittston Area lost on the road Monday in a non-league game.
