WEST PITTSTON — One of the most impressive performances in Friday night’s Wyoming Area-Pittston Area football game came on the special teams.
With the offense struggling to move, Pittston Area was forced to punt five times.
On the first punt, the snap sailed well over the head of Patriots punter Gavin Wolfe, who retreated and took advantage of a fortunate bounce to control the ball and turn back in the right direction. Two more punts came after snaps that bounced or rolled back to Wolfe.
Wolfe not only avoided blocked punts or being tackled before he could get the kicks away, but got off booming punts.
His shortest was a 37-yarder. Punts are measured from the line of scrimmage and that punt came after the high snap, much further behind the line than normal.
Walter’s remaining kicks, none of which were returned, covered 43, 52, 54 and 40 yards for an average of 45.4 yards.
Each of the three punts by Wyoming Area’s John Turner traveled at least 35 yards. He averaged 39.3 yards, including a 48-yarder that pinned Pittston Area at its 1 in the last minute of the half.
Notes
Lidge Kellum, who was named Carmelo Falcone Award winner as Most Valuable Player of the game, ran for 268 yards and three touchdowns for Wyoming Area.
Kellum surpassed 100 yards in the first quarter and, separately, in the second half. He carried nine times for 135 yards in the first quarter. After not running in the second quarter. He had 82 yards on seven carries in the third quarter and 51 yards on five carries in the fourth quarter.
Wyoming Area led in first downs 15-7, including 8-0 in the third quarter.
The Warriors lead the series 34-26, going 14-6 since the teams were tied at 20-20. Wyoming Area has won six of the last seven, including four by shutout.
