PIAA Class 3A state champion Wyoming Area will have a second player heading to a Division I football program.

Defensive end/tight end Derek Ambrosino announced via Twitter on Wednesday that he will be heading to West Virginia. According to West Virginia’s 247Sports affiliate, Ambrosino will be a preferred walk-on in the fall.

Ambrosino joins fellow Wyoming Area lineman Sammy Solomon as a Division I commitment. Solomon announced a few weeks ago that he will play at UMass.

Ambrosino turned in an outstanding season where he led the Warriors defense in four categories — sacks (10), tackles for loss (19), quarterback hurries (26) and fumbles causes (4). The 6-foot-3, 215-pounder was fourth on the team in tackles with 77.

As a tight end, Ambrosino was second on the team with 13 receptions for 292 yards and five touchdowns. He was also a strong blocker and posted 19 pancake blocks. His 4-yard touchdown pass in the state championship game helped Wyoming Area tie the score with 4:02 remaining. The Warriors went on to a 21-14 victory over Central Valley. He also recorded six tackles and 1.5 sacks in the game.

A two-year starter who also saw action as a sophomore, Ambrosino finished his high school career with 139 tackles, 27 tackles for loss, 14 sacks and 34 QB hurries. Nine of his 20 career receptions resulted in touchdowns.

Ambrosino will be joined at West Virginia by former Delaware Valley High School quarterback Matt Cavallaro. Cavallaro played at Lackawanna College this past season and announced in December he will be a preferred walk-on.

West Virginia finished 3-6 in the Big 12 and 5-7 overall in 2019.
