The Wyoming Area cheerleaders finished 15th in the state among large squads at the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association Competitive Spirit Competition Jan. 20-21 at the Giant Center in Hershey.

Wyoming Area was among the 20 teams that qualified for the state championships in the large squad division, for teams with 21 or more members. The Warriors made it by finishing second of 12 teams in the District 2 championships, which combined squads of all sizes.

The Wyoming Area team featured 23 members and was coached by Rhonda Pizano.

Wyoming Area cheerleaders perform at football, boys basketball, girls basketball and wrestling events. This was their first school year as an official competitive spirit team within the PIAA after going to competition last season on an exhibition basis.

Wyoming Area had a score of 54.87 points – the average of three judges – in the state preliminary round where scores ranged from 83.63 to 38.13.

Cumberland Valley from Mechanicsburg in District 3 won the large squad title.

Four-time District 2 champion Hazleton Area also had the district’s best state finish, taking seventh out of 36 medium squads.
