WILKES-BARRE TWP. – Nick Prociak is back in the Holy Redeemer lineup and headed to the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association Class 3A boys basketball state tournament.

The junior center from Jenkins Twp. missed half the season with an injury, but returned during the district playoffs.

Prociak started Thursday’s District 2 championship game at Mohegan Sun Arena when the Royals led in the first minute of the second half before Wyoming Seminary ran away for a 56-39 victory.

In the district final, Prociak finished with five points, four rebounds and a blocked shot. He powered his way inside to hit his first two shots, including Holy Redeemer’s first basket of the game.

CLASS 2A BOYS

SCRANTON – Old Forge had its season come to an end Feb. 24 with a 45-25 loss to top-seed and defending champion Holy Cross in the semifinal game at Scranton High School.

Kevin Welsh opened the game with a 3-pointer for the Blue Devils and finished with a team-high six points.

Old Forge held the ball to end the first quarter and start the second quarter, stretching three possessions for almost four minutes despite starting that stretch with a 16-7 deficit. Welsh hit another 3-pointer coming out of the delay to begin the second quarter and Brandon Nee followed with another to bring the Blue Devils within 16-13.

The Holy Cross defense took it from there. The Crusaders shut out the Blue Devils for the final 5:32 of the first half, then holding them to two points in the third quarter and three field goals in the second half.

Old Forge finished the season with an 8-16 record.

Holy Cross, with Tyler Mozeleski from Yatesville in the starting lineup, took a 16-game winning streak into Saturday’s district championship game against Northwest at the Mohegan Sun Arena.

CLASS 2A GIRLS

Defending champion Old Forge (12-12) will play Northwest (14-9) Sunday at 3 p.m. in the District 2 championship game at Mohegan Sun Arena.

The game is one of four that was moved from Friday to Sunday because of weather.

Both teams have already clinched state tournament berths.
