Wyoming Area grad Zach Lopatka busy at Youngstown State

Zach Lopatka, a lefty from Wyoming Area, is the number-three starting pitcher on the baseball team at Youngstown State in his first year at the National Collegiate Athletic Association Division I school.

Lopatka is playing the outfield in most of the games when he does not start on the mound.

The junior spent his first two college seasons on the junior college level with Lackawanna College in Scranton.

Lopatka has made 10 pitching appearances, eight of them as a starter. He is 0-4 with one complete game and a 7.18 earned run average. In 31 1/3 innings, Lopatka has given up 47 hits and 13 walks while striking out 23.

At the plate, Lopatka is hitting .183 in 32 games. He has two doubles, three stolen bases, seven runs scored and five RBI. With the help of 17 walks, Lopatka has a .376 on-base percentage.

Youngstown State is 12-29, including 7-13 in the Horizon Conference.

As a sophomore at Lackawanna, Lopatka had a 5-0 pitching record and hit .358 with seven home runs and 52 RBI.
