Allie Barber was named Bloomsburg University Athlete of the Week Monday for her role in helping the women’s soccer team extend its unbeaten streak to five games and its winning streak to four.
The senior midfielder and Pittston Area graduate had a goal and two assists when the Huskies won twice last week.
With Barber leading the way, Bloomsburg moved up to 23rd in the nation among National Collegiate Athletic Association Division II teams. The Huskies are listed in the United Soccer Coaches Association poll for the first time in eight seasons and are also ranked third in the Atlantic Region.
Barber opened the scoring in the 17th minute Oct. 3 to lead the team to a 3-0 victory over the Shippensburg.
For Barber, it was the third straight game in which she scored the game-winning goal and the seventh time she did so in her career. That streak ended in the latest win, a 4-1 victory over Slippery Rock Oct. 6, but Barber had two assists in the game, including one on the game-winner.
With the assists, Barber moved into fifth place in school history with 19 for her career.
Barber is Bloomsburg’s leading scorer this season with four goals and three assists to help the team to an 8-2-1 overall record.
During her career at Bloomsburg, Barber has made the climb from All-Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference third-team pick as a freshman to second team as a sophomore to first team as a junior when she was also a United Soccer Coaches All-Atlantic Regional second-team pick.
Barber started her streak of game-winners Sept. 23 with the only goal in a 1-0 win over nationally ranked West Chester.
After coming off the bench to score seven goals in 19 games as a freshman, Barber has started all 47 games since. She has scored 17 career goals.
At Pittston Area, Barber was both the school’s all-time leading soccer scorer with 159 career goals and 38 assists and a 1,000-point scorer in basketball. She was also a three-time letter winner in track and field.
Barber also played basketball during her sophomore year at Bloomsburg, appearing in 26 games, including three as a starter. She had 25 points and dished out 27 assists.
