Brianna Pizzano and Bella Scappaticci advanced to the District 2 Class 2A girls tennis doubles final, which they extended to a third set before settling for second place.

Holy Redeemer’s Camryn Cassetori-Tea Amerise defeated PIzzano-Scappaticci, 6-4, 4-6, 6-0, in Wednesday’s district final.

The district silver medal was the second of the year for Pizzano, who was also second in singles. Pizzano, a junior, won district singles titles in her first two high school seasons.

Pizzano-Scappaticci won three straight matches Monday at Kirby Park, then added a semifinal victory to start Wednesday’s action.

The Wyoming Area team opened the tournament with consecutive 6-0, 6-2 wins over West Scranton’s C.J. Grasso-Briana Moraca and Honesdale’s Kelly Varcoe-Allison Miszler.

Pizzano-Scappaticci then beat Mid Valley’s Becca Laboranti-Danielle Jason, 6-1, 6-1, in the quarterfinals.

Following a day off, Pizzano-Scappaticci won their semifinal match, 6-3, 6-3, over Scranton Prep’s Megan McDonald-Camilla Rinaldi.

Pizzano-Scappaticci had a bye through the preliminary round where teammates Stephanie Pavlochak-Abigail Drendall were eliminated.

GAR’s Michelle Tapia-Samantha Rodriguez defeated Pavlochak-Drendall, 6-3, 6-3.

Pittston Area’s Abby Connors-Kaitlyn Connors advanced through the first round in the District 2-4 Class 3A Subregional.

Connors-Connors defeated Delaware Valley’s Lauren Matarazzo-Rose Lombardo, 6-1, 1-6, 6-0, then lost to North Pocono’s Sarah Sposito-Megan Carney, 6-4, 6-0.

Wyoming Valley West’s Morgan Sheletsky-Julia Franks eliminated Pittston Area’s Julia Zambetti-Isabelle Lewis, 6-4, 6-2, in the first round.

Wyoming Seminary 0

Aleah Kranson and Tierney Porfirio each scored twice Thursday when Wyoming Area opened the Class 2A playoffs with a quarterfinal victory.

Kranson also had an assist.

Christina Kosco had the other goal.

The second-seeded Lady Warriors advance to host third-seeded Wyoming Seminary Oct. 30.

Host Dallas won Thursday’s Class 3A quarterfinal match, 25-20, 25-17, 25-22.

Emily O’Brien had nine kills, eight digs, eight service points and three aces in the loss.

Michalie Mazurkivich had seven kills, nine points and two blocks. Syra Reza had five kills, seven points and three digs.

Wyoming Area 0

Tunkhannock won all three games of Thursday’s Class 3A quarterfinal match at Dallas by 25-16 scores.

The host Chiefs scored goals 42 seconds apart in the first half to take control of Thursday’s Class 2A quarterfinal on the way to its 16th straight win.
