WHITEHALL – Wyoming Seminary allowed just two goals while posting five shutouts in six postseason games on the way to the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association field hockey championship it captured with Saturday’s 2-0 victory over Newport in the state Class A final.
The Blue Knights played much of the game shorthanded as the result of a series of cards, but still came up with the defensive effort to keep Newport contained.
Aubrey Mytych, a senior midfielder from Wyoming, was a big part of the defensive effort and helped explain how Wyoming Seminary continually limited opportunities
“When one of us got beat, we’d just recover inside and stepped back up,” Mytych told the Times Leader. “That was a big issue for us throughout the year.
“We picked a great time to get it fixed.”
The Blue Knights did not have many issues along the way while reaching their second straight final, then capturing the seventh state championship in school history. Wyoming Seminary also won Wyoming Valley Conference Division 1 and District 2 Class A titles.
Mytych, who committed to a National Collegiate Athletic Association Division I scholarship at Penn State University late in her sophomore year, was a big part of it. She became more defensive-minded with a move to midfield and helped solidify a talented team.
Wyoming Seminary drew motivation from losing, 2-1, to Greenwood in last season’s state title game as a nationally ranked team.
“We watched the game every night after that,” Mytych said in an interview prior to the state final. “We talked about that Greenwood game since preseason. I wanted it a lot by myself. Even coming back on the bus, everybody kept saying, ‘We did not play our game,’ last year. I said, ‘Don’t forget how it feels to lose.’ It sucks.
“Nobody has forgotten that.”
Mytych transferred to Wyoming Seminary from Wyoming Area prior to eighth grade.
