JENKINS TWP. – Matthew Romanowski had a hat trick Friday night when Wyoming Area defeated Pittston Area, 7-4, to remain unbeaten through four games of the Northeastern Pennsylvania Scholastic Hockey League season.
The game between the two rivals drew a near capacity crowd to the Revolution Ice Centre.
Pittston Area got a goal from Nick Scavo midway through the first period and carried the 1-0 lead until Wyoming Area strung together four goals in 3:54 early in the second period to take command.
“They got in a little bit of penalty trouble,” first-year Wyoming Area coach Brian Tweedy said. “We took over on our power play and took advantage of the opportunities that were given to us.
“The kids came together and started moving their feet, then were flying around, getting to loose pucks.”
Romanowski scored two of the goals in the outburst.
“He’s a special talent,” Tweedy said.
Romanowski showed off that talent on his first goal to put Wyoming Area ahead to stay.
“He got the puck off the faceoff and made a great move in front of the net to walk around one guy, then throw a backhander over the goaltender’s shoulder,” Tweedy said.
Romanowski got himself close to the net for the other two goals.
Jake Switzer, Nick Perry and Mason Hoeffner each finished with a goal and an assist for Wyoming Area.
Austin Kleinberger led Pittston Area with a goal and an assist.
