Wyoming Area and Pittston Area each posted home-court wins to open the high school basketball season Friday night.

The girls teams from both schools lost their openers.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Wyoming Area 65

Dan Wiedl scored 17 points to help make Anthony Macario a winner in his head coaching debut at Wyoming Area.

Nick Rubino added 14 points while sophomore Jake Greenfield had 10.

Wiedl scored 10 of his points in the third quarter when the Warriors broke the game open.

Wyoming Area led just 7-5 after one quarter and 26-14 at halftime. The Warriors used an 18-8 third quarter to take a 44-22 advantage into the final eight minutes.

Pittston Area 65

Hanover Area 49

Michael George scored 21 points and Pittston Area held Hanover Area to five second-quarter points.

George had eight points each in the first and fourth quarters.

The second-quarter defense allowed the Patriots to expand their lead from 15-12 to 27-17 at the half. Pittston Area held Hanover Area to one field goal in the quarter.

The Hawkeyes were still within 40-33 before the Patriots scored 25 points in the fourth quarter.

Brennan Higgins had seven points and freshman J.J. Walsh five while adding to George’s production over the final eight minutes.

Higgins finished with 17 points with the help of 7-for-8 free throw shooting.

Walsh had eight of his 10 points in the second half.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

GAR 43

Pittston Area 34

Vanessa Luna scored 15 points to lead GAR in the opener of a varsity girls-boys doubleheader at Pittston Area.

GAR outscored Pittston Area by between one and four points in each quarter to gradually take control.

Emma Coles led the Lady Patriots with 10 points.

Susquehanna 55

Wyoming Area 36

Taylor Huyck scored 20 points to help defending Lackawanna League Division 4 champion Susquehanna make Kirk Fallon a winner on his home court in his head coaching debut.

Aleah Kranson led Wyoming Area with nine points. Nicole Silinskie hit the team’s only two 3-pointers while adding eight.
