Wyoming Area made its first-ever appearance in the District 2 Class 2A boys tennis team semifinals where it was eliminated Thursday in a 3-2 loss to Holy Cross in a match played at Scranton Prep.
Nick Perry won at third singles and Mike Abromavage-Jake Butwin won at first doubles to give Wyoming Area its points.
The Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association introduced team tournaments in tennis on the district and state levels in the 2007-2008 school year. Wyoming Area qualified for the boys team tournament for the first time a year ago when it played in the preliminary round and also lost, 3-2, to Dunmore.
Wyoming Area qualified for the 10-team tournament as the fifth seed after finishing third out of 12 teams in the Wyoming Valley Conference with a 9-2 record.
Pittston Area missed the playoffs.
The final WVC standings: Wyoming Seminary 11-0, Dallas 10-2, Wyoming Area 9-2, Holy Redeemer 8-3, Crestwood 6-5, Berwick 6-5, MMI Prep 5-6, Wyoming Valley West 5-6, Tunkhannock 3-8, Pittston Area 2-9, GAR 1-10, Hazleton Area 0-11.
Wyoming Area’s second doubles team took Holy Cross to a third set before Dom Arbie-Thomas Parise defeated Patrick Musinski-Adam Winewski, 6-2, 1-6, 6-0, to advance to Tuesday’s team semifinals.
Perry topped Ryan Huestar, 7-6 (7-5), 6-2. Abromavage-Butwin defeated Joey Liuzzo-Sang Nguyen, 6-3, 6-2.
Holy Cross rolled at the top two singles spots. Logan Gregory defeated Mike Remley, 6-1, 6-0, at first singles and Joey Lennon beat Luke Warunek, 6-0, 6-0, at the second spot.
District 2 moves to singles play Thursday, beginning at 9 a.m. at Kirby Park where both the District 2-4 Class 3A Subregional and District 2 Class 2A tournaments will play three rounds to trim their fields to four semifinalists. The semifinals begin Friday at 1 p.m., followed by the finals.
The doubles tournaments will then be played the following week.
