Josh Kopcza made 15 appearances, the fourth-most on the pitching staff that helped NCAA Division I Binghamton University post a winning record and qualify for the America East Tournament.

The sophomore right-hander from Wyoming Area made one start. He finished with one save and a 4.88 earned run average, but did not have any wins or losses.

Kopcza picked up his first college save March 31 during a 15-3 America East win at the University at Albany. He pitched the final four innings, giving up just one run on five hits while striking out four.

In 31 1/3 innings, Kopcza gave up 41 hits, 18 runs, 17 earned runs and 18 walks. He struck out 12.

Kopcza made four appearances, all in relief, during his freshman year. He struck out seven and gave up just one extra-base hit in 9 1/3 innings. His season ERA was 2.89.

MORE BASEBALL

Wyoming Area graduate Zach Lopatka completed his college career at Youngstown State. He played two seasons of junior college baseball at Lackawanna College in Scranton before two seasons of Division I baseball at Youngstown.

The outfielder/pitcher played in 31 games, batting .232 with four doubles, six runs scored, four RBI and a stolen base.

Lopatka pitched in 10 of those games, including two starts. He was 0-3 with a save and a 9.00 ERA. In 19 innings, he struck out 14 while giving up 29 hits and seven walks.

MEN’S LACROSSE

Justin Joseph played a key role in helping Lycoming College reach its first conference final since 2005.

The freshman faceoff specialist/midfielder from Wyoming Area had an outstanding MAC Commonwealth Conference Tournament.

Lycoming defeated Messiah, 15-12, in the semifinals when Joseph won 19 of 29 faceoffs, scooped up 12 groundballs and assisted on a fourth-quarter goal.

Stevenson won its seventh straight conference title, routing Lycoming, 23-4, despite Joseph winning 20 of 31 faceoffs and adding eight groundballs.

Joseph led the team in groundballs with 101. He took 319 of the Warriors’ 439 faceoffs and won 60.5 percent of them. He played in every game and finished with a goal and two assists.

Lycoming when 9-9 overall, including 6-2 in the MAC Commonwealth regular season.

SOFTBALL

Cassidy Graham, a Wyoming Area graduate who is also listed as an infielder on the roster, pitched in 13 games as a freshman and Division II Indiana University of Pennsylvania.

Graham made one start. She was 2-2 with two saves and a 6.00 ERA. In 28 innings, she gave up 41 hits and six walks while striking out seven.

MEN’S TRACK AND FIELD

Phil Cocco from Pittston Area finished seventh in the Landmark Conference Outdoor Championships in the shot put, 10th in the hammer and 15th in the discus as a freshman at the University of Scranton.

Cocco was second in the shot put at the Monarch Open April 27.
