SCRANTON – Pittston Area senior Nicole Zambetti repeated her medal-winning effort Sept. 7 at McDade Park when she placed five out of 85 varsity girls runners at the 27th annual Lackawanna County Commissioners Cross Country Invitational.

Zambetti completed the hilly 3.1-mile course in 21:17.2. A year ago, she broke 21 minutes on the way to a third-place finish out of 84.

Forest City’s Rachel Korty won in 20:24.1.

Zambetti was the only Patriot to medal on the varsity level.

The Lady Patriots finished seventh out of 10 teams with a score of 188.

Marissa Gubitoso was second on the team and 45th overall.

Valley View beat out Lakeland, 47-71, for the team title.

Old Forge placed ninth, but did have Lindsey Welsh finish 14th.

The top 25 in each race received medals.

North Pocono’s Caleb Kenyon won the boys race in 16:19.5.

Pittston Area was led by Peyton O’Boyle, who was 29th out of 102 entries in 18:33.9.

Nathan Ridgley (35th) and David Bulford (42nd) also finished in the top half of the field.

Phoenixville defeated North Pocono, 61-89, for the team title.

Pittston Area was ninth out of 14 teams with a score of 261. Old Forge was 13th.

Two Pittston Area junior high runners also claimed medals.

Preston Klem was fifth out of 170 boys, running the 1.75-mile course in 11:05.6.

Scranton’s Brian McCormick won in 10:21.0.

Pittston Area was 13th and Old Forge last out of 15 teams.

Molly Fetchko was 22nd in the junior high girls race, which was won by Forest City’s Kate Korty in 11:48.31.

There were 190 entries.

Old Forge was 13th out of 16 schools. Pittston Area did not run a full team.
