Wyoming Area used wins from the top and the bottom of the lineup to pull out consecutive, 3-2 victories early in the week and clinch a berth in the District 2 Class 2A girls tennis team tournament.

First singles player Brianna Pizzano had a pair of 6-0, 6-0 wins while the second doubles team of Amanda McCormick and Sarah McCormick posted straight-set victories both days when the Lady Warriors defeated Crestwood Monday and Wilkes-Barre Area Tuesday by 3-2 scores.

The wins improved Wyoming Area to 7-4 in the Wyoming Valley Conference and 7-6 overall.

Bella Scappaticci provided the other point against Crestwood with a 7-5, 6-4 win at second singles.

Wyoming Area swept doubles against Wilkes-Barre Area with Cara Yorina-Kaitlyn Slusser pulling out a 7-5, 7-5 victory in the first position.

The District 2 team tournament is scheduled to open Wednesday with preliminary round matches at the higher-seeded teams. The quarterfinals will be played Thursday and Friday.

The semifinals and finals are scheduled for Kirby Park Oct. 8.

The district singles tournament is tentatively set for Oct. 10-11 at Kirby Park and the doubles for Oct. 15-16 at the same location.

Wyoming Area has one regular-season match remaining.

Pittston Area has completed its WVC schedule at 2-10 and will miss the team playoffs.

Syra Reza had 15 digs, nine service points and four kills Thursday to lead Pittston Area past Crestwood, 25-14, 29-27, 21-25, 25-23, in a WVC match.

Michalie Mazurkivich had 12 kills, 11 points and six blocks. Emma Coles had 12 digs, six kills and eight points.

Pittston Area improved to 6-3.

Lake-Lehman 3

Wyoming Area 2

Lake-Lehman pulled out a 25-20, 15-25, 26-24, 22-25, 15-13 home win in Wednesday’s WVC match.

Marissa Kovaleski had 29 assists and Alison Lynch had six kills for Wyoming Area (2-6).

Pittston Area 3

Emma Coles used five aces to help compile 12 service points while also adding three kills for Pittston Area in Tuesday’s 25-11, 25-14, 25-20 sweep.

Syra Reza had seven points and five kills. Tiara George had 23 assists, six points and two aces. Michalie Mazurkivich had seven kills, six points and two blocks.

Delaware Valley swept Pittston Area, 25-19, 25-11, 25-21, in Monday’s WVC match.

Michalie Mazurkivich had six blocks and five kills for the Lady Patriots. Emma Coles had seven service points and two digs. Syra Reza had four kills.

Hazleton Area rallied for a 25-22,9-25, 23-25, 25-19, 15-11 victory Monday at Wyoming Area.

Second-place Wyoming Area improved to 7-0-1 in the WVC and 10-0-1 overall by handing third-place Wyoming Valley West its second loss.

Michael Branley finished first overall in a six-way Wyoming Valley Conference cluster meet with first place in the team standings on the line, but the Warriors fell to unbeaten Holy Redeemer, 27-28, at Hanover Area Wednesday.

Wyoming Area won its other two meets to improve to 7-1 and remain alone in second place.

The Warriors defeated Hanover Area, 23-33, and Nanticoke, 15-48.

Pittston Area 3-0

Pittston Area swept Wednesday’s WVC meet, beating host Columbia-Montour Vo-Tech, 18-37, and beating both Berwick and Northwest by 23-32 scores.

The Patriots improved to 5-9.

GIRLS CROSS COUNTRY

Pittston Area defeated Northwest, 20-35, Wednesday while beating Berwick and host Columbia-Montour Vo-Tech, 15-50.

Wyoming Area 1-2

Wyoming Area defeated Nanticoke, 16-30, Wednesday, but lost 19-44 to unbeaten Holy Redeemer and 22-39 to host Hanover Area.

Aubriana Marranca led the Lady Warriors finishing second in the six-team meet.
