Teams from Abington Heights and Wyoming Area landed the top seeds for the District 2 girls tennis doubles tournament that is scheduled to begin Tuesday at 9 a.m. at Kirby Park.

Clare DellaValle and Lauren Koczwara, who played singles as part of the school’s team championship, are the top seed in the District 2-4 Class 3A Subregional. The Lady Comets are trying to sweep the three titles after Bella Peters won the singles championship, making her ineligible for doubles play.

Brianna Pizzano and Bella Scappaticci from Wyoming Area are the top seeds in District 2 Class 2A. Pizzano won two district singles titles before two more trips to the finals. She teamed with Scappaticci to place second in doubles last year when they also went in as the top seeds.

There are 22 teams in Class 3A and 36 in Class 2A. The tournaments will play down to the four semifinalists, who will get together Wednesday at 1 p.m. – tentatively set for Kirby Park – for the semifinals and finals.

Seeds were announced Sunday night on the District 2 website. Six seeds were awarded in Class 3A and eight in Class 2A.

The other seeds in Class 3A are: second, Mia Shuler-Kalindi Maggs, Williamsport; third, Alyssa Mazurek-Madelyn Terraccino, Hazleton Area; fourth, Anabel Gifoli-Sara Hoskins, Wyoming Valley West; fifth, Rosie Flock-Mary Kate Hillman, Williamsport; and sixth, Rina Hanumali-Sidney Horvath, Abington Heights.

Mazurek won the subregional doubles title last year when she teamed with Lily Nowak, who has since graduated.

The other seeds in 2A are: second, Ella Krypel-Nicole Joanlanne, Wyoming Seminary; third, Tea Amerise-Cassie Benderavich, Holy Redeemer; fourth, Camilla Rinaldi-Megan McDonald, Scranton Prep; fifth, Shailee DeSai-Emily Urbanski, Wyoming Seminary; sixth, Caroline Cadden-Madelyn Klassner, Holy Cross; seventh, Annie Johnson-Carly Habeeb, Scranton Prep; eighth, Faith Kendricks-Gia Mercatilli, Valley View.

Like Mazurek, Amerise won a doubles title last season when her partner was Camryn Cassetori.

Wyoming Seminary has threats to add to the team championship it won after splitting up the team of Joanlanne-Urbanski, which reached the semifinals last year, and putting each player with a new partner for teams that account for two of the top five seeds.

Scranton Prep’s semifinalist team of Rinaldi-McDonald is back intact.
