Wyoming Area will rest for one week, then be home for two weeks of District 2 Class 3A football playoffs if it can avoid an upset in the semifinals.
The Warriors, who repeated as Wyoming Valley Conference Class 3A/A Division champions, completed a 9-1 regular season Friday night, officially securing the top district seed, which means they will be at home throughout the Class 3A playoffs.
Following the merger of GAR and Meyers into Wilkes-Barre Area with Coughlin this season, the pool of potential District 2 Class 3A playoff teams dropped from nine to seven. That meant a reduction in the playoff field to six teams with the top two earning byes.
“We’ve got to heal up and treat and get some guys as healthy as we can get them,” Wyoming Area coach Randy Spencer said. “We’ve got a great game coming up a couple of weeks.”
When Wyoming Area returns to action Nov. 8, it will face either Lake-Lehman or Lakeland. The Warriors had their toughest game within District 2 this season against Lake-Lehman when they rallied in the second half for a 35-30 victory. Lakeland upset Wyoming Area, 21-14, at Anthony “Jake” Sobeski Stadium in last year’s district semifinal.
Pittston Area (4-6) is headed for the District 2 Class 4A playoffs, but its opponent was uncertain as of Saturday morning.
While awaiting some results from outside the district that impact teams’ ratings, Tunkhannock had a .49649-.49626 playoff ratings race lead over Pittston Area for the sixth seed as of Saturday morning.
The sixth seed will play at third-seeded Berwick (8-2). The seventh seed will play at second-seeded Valley View (9-1).
