Pittston Area got strong matches from several players Monday when it went on the road and pushed top-seeded host Berwick to five sets before having its season end in the District 2-4 Class 3A Subregional semifinals.
Berwick, which tied for the best record in the Wyoming Valley Conference during the regular season, won by scores of 26-24, 25-18, 23-25, 17-25, 15-10.
Tiara George had 21 service points, 27 assists and nine digs for the Lady Patriots, who finished 12-5.
Pittston Area had a five-match winning streak broken in the semifinal loss. It had won eight of its last nine and finished the season with the only losses in the last 10 matches coming against Berwick.
Michalie Mazurkivich and Emma Coles shared the team lead with 10 kills and each made other contributions. Mazurkivich had nine blocks and five digs. Coles had nine points and six digs.
Syra Reza added 15 digs, six kills and five points. Emilee Shaw had 12 digs, nine kills and six points.
Berwick was led by Camille Pinterich with 23 digs and 14 points. Sarah Steeber had 16 kills and Rachel Shaftoe had 20 digs.
The Lady Bulldogs also won the first two sets in Wednesday’s final before dropping the last three and being upset by Western Wayne in the championship match at Holy Redeemer.
