WEST PITTSTON — Borough officials dedicated the municipal building Saturday, Nov. 5 in the name of the late Mayor Anthony “Tony” Denisco. Denisco passed away in April at the age of 73.
Prior to becoming mayor, Denisco volunteered for the borough in which he was born and raised. He served as for fire chief for the Goodwill Hose Co. and served with the West Pittston Hose Co. No. 1. He also served as a member of the auxiliary police department, constable, and the borough’s EMA director.
He was acknowledged as the borough’s Outstanding Citizen in 2014.
Denisco took office in 2011 and just a few months later, West Pittston was devastated with a flood that left more damage than that of the Agnes Flood of 1972.
“If there was one place that Tony considered his second home, it was the borough building and everyone involved was his second family,” said Denisco’s grandson, Anthony Capozucca, after the ceremony. “He would do anything for West Pittston and absolutely loved his town. He would be beyond proud of the love and support that has been shown. This is a great honor.”
Family, friends and community leaders were present for the dedication of the building.
“It was very poignant and we felt a very warm and loving honor to the late mayor,” Judy Aita, president of West Pittston Council said of the event. “It was a nice crowd of friends and family including some of Tony’s classmates that go back over 55-plus years.”
Councilman Peter Albano was the master of ceremonies during the event. He recalled the late mayor’s life and service to the borough of West Pittston.
Denisco’s parish priest, Msgr. John Sempa of Corpus Christi Parish (Immaculate Conception Church) also offered words about Denisco.
A reception followed the ceremony.
