PITTSTON — Greater Pittston women are getting the chance to tell their stories.

The Friends of the Pittston Memorial Library are holding a “Women of the Round Table” discussion in the library on Sunday, March 19.

Maria Capolarella-Montante, president of the Friends, said the discussion goes hand-in-hand with National Women’s History Month, which is celebrated in March.

“The concept of the round table is we want to sit around it and discuss women,” she said. “That’s how women in the old days met, at a round table, and discussed things over a cup of coffee or a cup of tea. They shared stories, had laughter, tears and that round table was where they met to do a lot of their talking.”

National Women’s History Month is an annual declared month that highlights the contributions of women to events in history and their impact on society.

According to National Women’s History project website, this year’s theme is “Honoring Trailblazing Women in Labor and Business.”

The round table discussion will feature 12 women from Greater Pittston who will discuss the women who influenced and inspired their lives.

Montante said some of the presenters will discuss women they knew personally as well as women in American history and how they impacted their lives.

One of the presentors and member of the Friends, Ellen Mondlack, will discuss Mother Theresa, a Roman Catholic nun who devoted her life to serving the poor and destitute around the world.

“I’ll be talking about the kind of struggle she had physically, financially and emotionally the things that she had to do in life,” Mondlak said.

The discussion is open to the public and is free of charge. Refreshments will be available.

Members of the Friends are hoping for a good turnout, emphasizing it’s important for people to understand the role women have played and continue to play.

“We hope this brings more awareness to women’s roles in history and society,” said Ann Simko. “It’s not just to recognize women, but recognize their accomplishments and how hard it was for some of them to get there.”
