PITTSTON — Pennsylvania Citizens for Better Libraries recently awarded the PCBL Friends Group of the Year Award 2017 to the Pittston Memorial Library Friends at its annual meeting held in Grantville.

The award is given to a PCBL member friends group that has provided significant and meaningful assistance to its library.

Howard Grossman, fundraising coordinator, wrote the proposal placing the Pittston Library Friends in nomination, stating the numerous fundraising activities conducted in support of the many programs offered to patrons in the library beginning with Infancy to Senior Citizens.

The Friends maintain a “Book Store” located in the lower level of the library and hold book sales seasonally, conduct a $500 gift car raffle three times a year, participate in a Barnes and Noble Book Fair yearly, and host “Meet the Artist or Author” and “Ladies of the Roundtable” in March to celebrate Women’s History Month. In addition, the Friends are visible at the Pittston Farmers Market distributing cook books and children’s books, the Second Friday Art Walk on Main Street, the Pittston Tomato Festival and Saint Patrick’s Parades.
