PITTSTON — There is a new addition to the downtown business district.
Ah Baby & Co. held a soft opening at 81 S. Main St., next to Lolliposh Clothing & Gifts, on Aug. 12.
West Pittston native and owner of Ah Baby & Co., Caroline Nelson, purchased the building four years ago, which houses her business and several apartments.
Nelson, who now resides in Kingston and has been a nurse for 20 years, the last 14 being in labor and delivery, saw a need for quality, wholesome, environmentally safe babywear, nursery furniture, bassinets, car seats, strollers, and cribs in Greater Pittston.
“I have a 7-year-old daughter and a 4-year-old son and through having my children, I was striving to find the best quality, wholesome products for them,” Nelson said. “I had to do all my searches out of the area for products all that whole time I was educating myself on babywear and sensory play items for children so I wanted to bring all that into one location for families to have in one spot.”
During her educational process, Nelson became a certified child passenger safety technician.
Nelson said she wanted to focus on selling more natural made, nontoxic materials as well as furniture and baby gear made with the highest safety certifications and awards.
Longtime friend Melissa Spear, of Clarks Summit, will assist Nelson as store manager at Ah Baby & Co.
“Once I purchased the building, it took a lot of help from a lot of people like the contractors, Mayor Lombardo, Mary Kroptavich, and many others involved in putting the building together,” Nelson explained.
Nelson said there is a bit of irony in owning the building. A family friend owned the structure when she was a child and she would make frequent visits to the building.
“We will be having a grand opening in late September,” Nelson said. “We will have giveaways, food, beverages. It will be a nice big party.”
Pre-grand opening hours will be 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesdays through Fridays, and noon to 4 p.m. Saturdays. Nelson said she will open one evening a week that has yet to be determined.
