Brandon Matthews slipped from contention during the final round of the Lake Charles Championship but still finished high enough in the April 24-27 tournament to maintain his second position in the Korn Ferry Tour season standings.
Matthews went into this weekend’s Club Car Championship in Savannah, Ga. second on the money earnings list and second in the point standings for the Korn Ferry Tour. A top 25 season finish in the point standings would earn the Pittston Area graduate a promotion to the PGA Tour for next season.
Although Matthews made his PGA Tour debut last season on a sponsor’s exemption, attaining full-time status as a tour member remains the primary goal of his continued rise through the ranks of professional golf.
Matthews was in the hunt for a second Korn Ferry title this season, after winning twice on the PGA Latinoamerica Tour in 2021, following a third-round 63 at the Lake Charles Championship in Louisiana.
For the second straight week, Matthews wound up tied for 21st. He finished at 10-under-par, 274 with rounds of 69-68-63-74.
Matthews has earned $209,199 this season.
The 27-year-old from Dupont, now playing out of Jupiter, Fla., struggled early in Thursday’s opening round in Georgia. He was 4-over-par after 6 holes, parred four straight, then had three birdies in the next five holes before a late bogey left him with a 2-over-par, 74.
The Korn Ferry Tour takes next week off, then resumes with the April 13-16 Veritex Bank Championship in Arlington, Tex.
