Wyoming Area 285-pounder Nate Obrzut posted two pins Friday to reach the Class 2A semifinals of the District 2 Individual Wrestling Championships.
Pittston Area’s Oscar Ciriaco, Dominic Innamorati and Brody Spindler all made the semifinals in Class 3A while Connor Novakowski joined Obrzut, his Wyoming Area teammate, in the Class 2A semifinals.
Friday’s action trimmed the field to four semifinalists and four consolation bracket wrestlers in each weight class in both Class 3A and 2A of the event, which was being conducted at Wilkes-Barre Area High School.
Obrzut pinned Montrose’s Justus Acker in 52 seconds then put away Mid Valley’s Devon Hill in 2:45.
Novakowski wrestled just 40 seconds on the first day of the two-day event. That’s how long he needed to pin Berwick’s Christopher Mayorga at 121.
Ciriaco (107), Innamorati (145) and Spindler (215) each received first-round byes, then won in the quarterfinals.
Ciriaco pinned Scranton’s Daniel Gonzales in 2:49.
Innamorati needed just 34 seconds to stop Mark Lynott from Abington Heights.
Spindler pulled out a 3-2 decision over Adan Salazar.
Wyoming Area finished the first day in seventh of 16 Class 2A teams with 39 points.
Berwick was in the lead 97-91½ over second-place Western Wayne.
Pittston Area was 11th out of 12 teams in Class 3A with 35 points.
West Scranton led the way with 88 points, 5½ more than Abington Heights.
Michael Appel (114) and Ben Gravine posted first-round pins and were among the Wyoming Area wrestlers to get through Friday with just one loss, holding on to a spot in the consolation brackets.
Chase Wilhelm (107), Shane Emsley (127), and Caden Reynolds (215) also made it to Saturday.
Tibor Toth (114), Jahiem Butler (121), Dominic Bernardi (127) and Jake Aftewicz (152) all went 1-1 Friday to reach Saturday along with 133-pounder Shawn Shimonis.
