Before Pittston Area could win the Wyoming Valley Conference Class 3A golf title Friday, it first had to get through the conference’s new semifinal round of the team playoffs.
Pittston Area qualified in Class 3A and Wyoming Area made it in Class 2A to the four-team tournaments that the conference used to determine its two representatives against the Lackawanna League champions Oct. 4 in the District 2 team championship matches at Fox Hill Country Club.
Wyoming Valley Country Club was added to the championship mix as the host site of the team semifinals Wednesday.
Pittston Area made it through that step while Wyoming Area had the team portion of its season end there.
Pittston Area 311, Crestwood 312
Patrick Ruane shot a 73 to lead the Patriots to Wednesday’s semifinal victory.
Noah Gruber added a 77.
Chris Scavo shot an 80 and Andrew Nocito an 81 to complete the four-man team score.
Nick Cook (83) and Ryan Noone (84) also played well.
Crestwood was led by Sienna Smith with a 75 and Tommy Biscotti with a 76.
Lake-Lehman 304, Wyoming Area 343
Charlie Weidner shot a 71 to lead Lake-Lehman to victory in Wednesday’s semifinal.
Aiden August’s 84 led Wyoming Area.
Mario Belza shot 85, Kristian Pugliese 86 and Jeremy Layland 88.
Wyoming Seminary 156, Pittston Area 158
Wyoming Seminary completed an undefeated, regular-season championship in the WVC by getting past the Patriots Monday behind a 35 defending state Class 2A champion Nick Werner with a 35.
Anna Zapletalova added a 37.
Patrick Ruane had a 37 and Noah Gruber 38 for the Patriots.
Final standings
Wyoming Seminary finished 14-0, one match in front of Lake-Lehman at 13-1.
Pittston Area, Crestwood and Dallas all went 11-3 and tied for third in the 15-team conference. They were followed by: Wyoming Area 8-6, Hazleton Area 8-6, Berwick 6-8, Holy Redeemer 6-8, Wyoming Valley West 6-8, Tunkhannock 5-9, Wilkes-Barre Area 3-11, MMI Prep 2-12, Nanticoke 1-13, Hanover Area 0-14.
