Two of District 2’s three 10-1 football teams will go head-to-head Friday night when Wyoming Area goes to Western Wayne for a Class 3A semifinal rematch of their Week Three game.

Western Wayne won the first meeting 34-23 behind the exploits of their tailback Josh Vinton, who also returned an interception for a touchdown in the fourth quarter.

The Wildcats have scored at least 42 points in six of their 11 games, but the offense has had some struggles lately.

Western Wayne was scoreless into the fourth quarter Friday night before Sean Owens scored on a 4-yard run for a 7-0, quarterfinal victory over Berwick.

The Wildcats started 8-0 before losing to Mid Valley, the team with which they shared the Lackawanna Football Conference title, 22-10.

Owens and Vinton are the top two threats on a highly experienced team.

Owens is the team’s top receiver with 34 catches for 689 yards and he may be even better as a defensive back. Against Berwick, he intercepted two passes and recovered a fumble.

Vinton has rushed for 1,974 yards and 25 touchdowns.

With support from Owens, quarterback John Pyatt has thrown for 1,048 yards and has a 13-5, touchdown-interception ratio.

The winner will go on to face either Mid Valley (8-3) or defending champion Scranton Prep (10-1).
