Tibor Toth, Chase Baron and Brody Spindler posted first-period pins Wednesday night when Pittston Area celebrated Senior Night by defeating visiting Wyoming Valley West 45-29 in a match that clinched no worse than a tie for first place in Wyoming Valley Conference Division 1 wrestling.
The Patriots, who are 17-4 overall, finished the division schedule with a 4-1 record. Wilkes-Barre Area is 3-1 with a make-up match against Hazleton Area still on the schedule.
District 2 is scheduled to announce its Dual Meet Wrestling Tournament pairings Sunday. Pittston Area has earned the second seed and a chance to host Wednesday’s opener where Wilkes-Barre Area (5-5 overall) is among the possible opponents.
Toth won in 58 seconds at 121 pounds for an early, 15-0 lead; Baron won in 1:02 at 152 to help the Patriots take another 15-point advantage; but it was Spindler’s pin in 1:29 in the next-to-last bout at 215 that clinched the victory.
Samuel Hankey closed out the bout with a pin late in the second period at 285.
Pittston Area took advantage of three forfeits and Mikel Roman opened the match with a 6-4 decision at 107.
Lake-Lehman 41, Wyoming Area 33
Host Lake-Lehman won the final seven bouts Wednesday to rally from a 33-0 deficit and win the WVC Division 2 finale.
Connor Novakowski’s first-period pin at 133 pounds created the 33-point lead.
Nate Obrzut opened with a decision at 285, then the Warriors picked up forfeits in the four lightest weight classes.
Final Division 2 standings are: Dallas 5-0, Berwick 4-1, Hanover Area 3-2, Lake-Lehman 2-3, Wyoming Area 1-4, Tunkhannock 0-5.
