Jon Cortez won both the 50- and 100-yard freestyle events Tuesday when Wyoming Area lost to visiting Hazleton Area 125-27 in a Wyoming Valley Conference boys swimming opener.
Cortez won the 50 by more than two seconds with a time of 25.69 and was the only one of six entries to break a minute in the 100. He also anchored a second-place finish in the closing 400 freestyle relay.
Nanticoke 90, Pittston Area 31
Nanticoke won at Pittston Area Tuesday in another WVC opener.

Michael Gubitoso had the only win for the Patriots with a time of 1:26.02 in the 100-yard breaststroke. He also was second in the 50 freestyle and 200 medley relay and was part of a third-place finish in the 200 freestyle relay.
