DALLAS — Back Mountain finally played a game in the District 31 Little League Major Baseball tournament. It was worth the wait.
Pitcher Jordan Rollins was dominant and Max Kovich and Ollie Bross hit home runs as Back Mountain defeated Greater Wyoming Area 7-1 on Friday night.
Back Mountain had weather issues on Tuesday at home against Plains. The game was suspended in the second inning with Back Mountain leading 2-0 because of lightning. The game will resume 6 p.m. Sunday.
Friday’s game was originally scheduled for a 6 p.m. start at GWA’s field in West Pittston, but moved to 8 p.m. because of heat concerns. Heavy thunderstorms rolled in about two hours beforehand, making the field unplayable and shifting the game to Back Mountain at 8:30 p.m.
Once everything was sorted out, Rollins shut down the GWA bats in pitching a complete game. He struck out seven, surrendered one hit and walked none.
Rollins retired 13 in a row before GWA’s Christian Cavalieri broke up the no-hitter with a single to center with two outs in the fifth. Cavalieri eventually scored his team’s only run on two wild pitches and an error on the last one.
GWA had just two other baserunners when Bryce Bauman reached on an error in the first and Stephen Arnold reached on an error in the sixth.
Back Mountain got the scoring going in the second inning, scoring four times.
Rollins opened the second with a single and Andrew Salko singled, with Rollins scoring on an error on the play.
An out later, Parker Page walked. Kovich then launched a towering home run to right field for a 4-0 lead.
Back Mountain increased its lead to 5-0 in the fourth. Bruce Knowles walked with one out, moved to second on a single by Rollins and to third when Mac Hanson reached base on an error.
Knowles scored on a wild pitch.
Back Mountain scored two more in the fifth inning. Ethan Wielgosz reached on an error with two outs. Bross followed with a home run to left.
After finishing the game with Plains on Sunday, Back Mountain (1-0) hosts Swoyersville/West Side (0-2) on Monday. GWA (1-1) travels to Plains (1-0) on Monday.
