Brandon Matthews was plugging along near par – 1-over for the day and 1-under for the tournament – before putting together a big finish March 5 at the Puerto Rico Open.
Matthews birdied the final five holes of the tournament to finish at 6-under-par, 282 at Grand Reserve Golf Club, climbing into a tie for 40th place.
The Pittston Area graduate started the streak with a birdie after driving into the rough on the par-4, 14th. Matthews birdied the par-5, 15th and 18th holes by reaching each in two and two-putting.
Matthews shot rounds of 71-72-71-68.
After making two straight cuts, the 28-year-old from Dupont, who now plays out of Florida, has earned $66,789 in PGA Tour prize money this season.
Matthews ranks first on the tour in average club-head speed at 126.06 miles per hour.
That club-head speed helps Matthews rank second on the tour with an average driving distance of 320.4. He is also ninth in the percentage of putts made from 20-25 feet.
Matthews has this week off, but is entered in the Valispar Championships Thursday-March 19 at Innisbrook Resort Copperhead Course in Palm Harbor, Fla.
