Wyoming Area avenged its only loss of the girls soccer season, allowing the Lady Warriors to close in on first place in Wyoming Valley Conference Division 2 and end the week as the leader in the pursuit of the top seed for the District 2 Class 2A playoffs.

The Lady Warriors are 5-1-1 in the division, trailing only Holy Redeemer (6-1) after earning a split of the season, home-and-home series with the Lady Royals. Wyoming Area is 9-1-2 overall to help it compile the best playoff power rating among 11 Class 2A teams trying to land spots in the eight-team playoff.

Wyoming Area girls 3, Holy Redeemer 2

Alexis Skilonger scored the game-winner with 9:15 remaining Tuesday to lift Wyoming Area over visiting Holy Redeemer at 10th Street Field.

Avery Kozerski put Holy Redeemer in front with the first of her two goals 9:25 into the game.

Ava Musinski scored the first of her two Wyoming Area goals, off a Bella Costa assist with 18:30 left, to make it 1-1 at halftime.

Musinski put Wyoming Area ahead early in the second half but Kozerski answered two minutes later.

The teams remained tied 2-2 for more than 21 minutes before Skilonger’s goal.

Abby Francis made 10 saves in the win.

Holy Redeemer had a 12-7 advantage in shots while Wyoming Area led 5-3 in corner kicks.

Wyoming Area has won seven straight.

Wyoming Area girls 5, Hanover Area 1

Ella Shepulski scored in each half Sept. 21 to lead Wyoming Area to the home-field victory in WVC Division 2.

Shepulski’s first goal came 19 seconds after Sofia Menta had opened the scoring with an assist from Emily Kostik.

Kostik finished with a goal and two assists.

Ava Musinski also scored while Frankie Pizano had an assist.

The Wyoming Area defense did not allow a corner kick.

Pittston Area girls

The Lady Patriots lost WVC Division 1 games Monday at home 9-0 to Crestwood and Thursday 6-0 at Dallas.

Pittston Area has been shut out in three straight games since beating Hazleton Area for its only win of the season.

The Lady Patriots are 1-7 in Division 1 and 1-10 overall.

Pittston Area boys 3, Crestwood 2

William Egan’s overtime goal allowed host Pittston Area to knock off Crestwood in a WVC Division 1 game.

Jacob Ivey assisted on the winner.

Pittston Area’s Gavin Wolfe forced overtime with an unassisted goal with about three minutes left in regulation. Aidan Egan also scored in the second half for the Patriots.

Hazleton Area 3, Pittston Area boys 1

Hazleton Area won at Pittston Area in Friday’s WVC Division 1 game.

The Patriots are 3-5 in the division and 5-7-1 overall. They rank fifth of nine teams chasing eight District 2 Class 3A playoff berths.

Wyoming Area boys

Wyoming Area lost twice in WVC Division 2 games, both by shutout.

The Warriors fell 8-0 at Wyoming Seminary Monday, then lost 2-0 at home against Lake-Lehman Thursday.

Wyoming Area is 4-5 in Division 2 and 5-6 overall. The Warriors are seventh of 13 teams in the District 2 Class 2A playoff race where eight teams qualify.
