Wyoming Area turned around a slow start in girls lacrosse, finishing the regular season on a high note.
The Lady Warriors won six of their last seven Wyoming Valley Conference games, suffering just a one-goal loss to Dallas, to finish 8-5. They had opened the season with three straight losses, two of them by one goal each, and were 2-4 before becoming more successful in the second half of the season.
Wyoming Area qualified for the District 2 Class 2A playoffs, but finished 8-6 overall when it lost to North Pocono 14-5 in the quarterfinals.
Along the way, Jules Gonzales scored her 200th career goal. Gonzales, a senior, was a second-team, all-star choice by WVC coaches for her play on the attack.
Gonzales finished with 36 goals and nine assists, second on the team in both categories to Lyla Rehill’s 51 goals and 11 assists.
Pittston Area went 1-12 in the WVC and 1-13 overall. The Lady Patriots were winless through eight games before winning 7-5 at Wilkes-Barre Area.
Softball
Both Pittston Area and Wyoming Area went 7-5 in WVC play.
The Lady Patriots finished third in Division 1. They went 11-9 overall despite having one of the top offenses in District 2, batting .361 as a team and averaging 9.1 runs per game.
Wyoming Area went 12-10 overall.
Pittston Area defeated Shikellamy 13-2 in the District 2-4 Class 5A quarterfinals before having its season end with a 13-4 loss to eventual champion North Pocono.
The Lady Warriors also reached the semifinals in District 2 Class 4A where they defeated Wallenpaupack 5-1 but were eliminated with an 11-0 shutout loss to Tunkhannock.
Marina Antal, who batted .515, and Samantha Herbert, who drove in 35 runs, led the Pittston Area offense and made the Times Leader All-WVC team along with Wyoming Area pitcher Alexa Gasek.
Track and field
Pittston Area went 4-2 in WVC Division 1 and got an individual District 2 Class 3A gold medal from Ali Butcher in the 100-meter dash.
Butcher also placed third in the 200 to lead the way for the Lady Patriots while they were finishing 10th in the team standings. She was the team’s lone representative at the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association Championships in Shippensburg, placing 26th in the 100.
